How long do I have after class ends to get my permit?  How long do I have after I get my permit to begin Behind-the-Wheel?

There is no requirement for when students can obtain their permit, however, the student must by 15 ½ to try for the permit, and no more than 13 months may pass between the classroom and behind-the-wheel portion of training.  If this occurs, a refresher course will be required.

There is, however, a law that states that students must begin Behind-the-Wheel training within 60 days of obtaining their permit.  This means that students must have at least one behind-the-wheel time in the first 60 days that they hold the permit.  Contact the driving school in a timely manner after you receive your permit so that your first driving time can be scheduled within these 60 days.  If you should go over the 60 days, an fee of $50.00 will be assessed, and at least 2 hours of classroom make-up time will be required.

If students need to drive on their Temps for six months, they probably will drive in wintry conditions before getting a license. Isn't that a little scary, for students and for parents?

It may be scary, but in the long run it's really a good thing. Once they're licensed, young people have to face winter driving about six months of the year in Wisconsin. if they learn how to respond to snowy and icy conditions under supervision ( a certified instructor can use the extra brake and help steer in crisis), they will have the skills to handle challenges the weather presents. Our position is this: a driver who has learned to be smooth on the gas, the steering wheel and the brakes in the winter is a better driver overall.

If our instructors consider conditions unsafe for practice driving, we will call and reschedule Behind-the-Wheel appointments.

What about a student who has finished the program and doesn't feel ready for the Road Test? Or an adult who never got a license for whatever reason, maybe a new citizen? Or an adult who just hasn't driven much?

We offer Refresher Lessons and Starter Lessons by the hour. We specialize in nervous beginners... or non-beginners!

What about students with full schedules: school, extracurricular activities, jobs, etc.? How can they get their lessons and their family driving time in?

Wisconsin's rules have changed to make it easier for students to do their family driving time. The regulations now call for a qualified person, not necessarily a parent, to be in the front seat as a guide. Check the Wisconsin handbook for details.

Just before the road test does the school conduct a review type of lesson?

The school offers a free review lesson just before the student takes their road test. This review is scheduled by the student for a time at their convenience.

What are some of the things that could stop me from completing Driver Ed or taking the Road Test on time?

Sometimes, students will not be able to take the road test at the time they wish because something is missing from either the behind-the-wheel or classroom portion of their training.   Here are some of the common reasons why students road tests may be held up  -- they are all easily avoidable!

  •  Missing BTW appointments -- this is the most common reason students don't finish on time.  Students who often cancel appointments last minute or do not show up for their appointment may fall behind.  It is especially important to reschedule immediately if you should cancel an appointment -- we are often booked up to a month in advance, so if you call us only a week before the road test, we might have a hard time squeezing you in.  While we post BTW schedules online and often call students to confirm appointments, it is the student's primary responsibility to remember their appointment date and time and to call us with any cancellations or questions.

  •  Money is owed either for behind-the-wheel or classroom update fees --  this will cause us to withhold the completion slip until the student is paid in full.

  •  Student or parent signature is missing on the student's contract or enrollment card -- students must have both signatures to be awarded a completion certificate.

  •  Missing classes, presentations, assignments, or folders -- the classroom portion must be complete in order for the student to finish -- this includes presentations for classroom updates; check with the driving school to make sure everything is complete before coming to your last driving appointment

  •  Scheduling the road test too early -- although it may be tempting to do so, do not schedule the road test before you have completed your fifth driving appointment and have scheduled your last -- too often, students schedule the road test and then call in to make appointments, only to find that no BTW times are available when for a month or so!

What are the age requirements for Driver Education and licensing?

Students may begin Classroom at the age of 14 years 5 months. They may get an Instruction Permit (Temps) at 15 years 6 months. They are eligible for a probationary License at the age of 16; but, according to the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) law, they must have driven a full six months on Temps to get it.

What are the other requirements of the Wisconsin Law?

  •  The state requires that students make up all Classroom misses. Students who miss more than 4 hours (2 sessions) are  disqualified in the program; they need to start over.
  •  On the Temps application, students must verify that they have been free of any moving traffic violation for six months prior to applying. The school that will teach a student Behind-the-Wheel must sign the application (School Signature); the student must do Temps testing within 60 days of getting this signature. A parent or guardian needs to sponsor each student under 18 years of age for Temps and the Probationary License; as part of sponsorship, parents must verify that students meet school attendance requirements. Students who receive Temps must take at least one Behind-the-Wheel lesson within the first 60 days.
  •  At license application time, parents must verify that students have accumulated at least 30 hours of behind-the-wheel experience, of which 10 hours must be night driving. for the first nine months of driving on the Probationary License, there are several restrictions regarding time of day and who may be in the car; if there is a moving violation or a violation of restrictions during those nine months, the restrictions are extended.
  •  The requirements regarding temps and the probationary license are explained in the Wisconsin handbook. A copy of the handbook is given to each student during the first Classroom session

Do we need appointments for the Temps test and/or the Road Test? Where can students take the tests?

Temps and Road tests can be taken at any Wisconsin Licensing facility. We do offer the temps (permit) test at the La Crosse School, just call in and set up a time. No appointment is needed for the Temps test at the DMV. We fill out the application in class and give instructions on what needs to be done and brought to make the process go smoothly.

An appointment is needed for the Road Test. This can be done by going on the DMV web site or click here to schedule a Road Test.
